AMG GT Black Series is coming back — and the V8 is the plot twist

Everybody chasing hybrid this, electric that — and Mercedes-AMG just confirmed the next GT Black Series is coming back with what the press expects to be a flat-plane 4.0 twin-turbo V8. Not a hybrid V6 science project. That is the story.

AMG boss Ola Källenius basically teased Autocar readers that the thing would be “insane,” and that the engineers were being let off the leash. The framing from the top: this is the road twin of the next GT3.

Why people are actually excited

Black Series cars have always been the loud ones. The last GT Black Series (2020) was a front-engine missile with a huge wing and a ~720-horse V8. This new one is the first fresh Black Series since then — and in a market full of plug-in experiments, the rumor mill pointing at a flat-plane crank V8 feels like a flex.

Motor1 and others have been circling the same powertrain story: same new AMG V8 family as the wild CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung territory, expected to clear the current GT 63 Pro, and likely to beat the old Black Series’s ~720 hp. Exact numbers are still TBA.

Timing and the honest caveats

Reveal talk is 2027. On-sale talk is around 2028. Price guesses in the press sit in the ~£300k / ~$380k+ neighborhood — treat that as gossip until AMG prints a sticker.

What is solid: the name is coming back, the GT3-road-car framing is coming from the CEO, and the “insane” quote is real. What is still press consensus rather than a press kit: the exact flat-plane V8 spec, final horsepower, and MSRP.
