McLaren's first SUV: can it do for McLaren what the DBX couldn't do for Aston Martin?

A UK-built hybrid aimed at the Urus and DBX, due before 2030. The Urus made Lamborghini rich; the DBX didn't save Aston Martin.

What McLaren has confirmed

McLaren is building its first SUV. It will be a hybrid, it will be built in the UK, and it arrives before 2030. McLaren is aiming it squarely at the Lamborghini Urus and the Aston Martin DBX.

What's only reported

Several details are reports, not confirmed facts. Reports say the project is codenamed P47, that it uses a V8, and that it could arrive in 2028. McLaren hasn't confirmed any of these.

Why McLaren needs it

McLaren is loss-making, and its owner, CYVN, has committed $2B to the company. A high-volume, high-margin model is the obvious way to turn that money into a stable business.

Two very different precedents

The Urus turned Lamborghini into a profit machine. It brought in buyers who wanted the badge and the drama in a car they could use every day.

The DBX tells the other story. Aston Martin got its SUV, and it still didn't fix the company's finances. An SUV alone isn't a rescue plan. It depends on brand pull, pricing, and the business it sits in.

Where the McLaren market stands

As of October 13, Exotic Car Trends tracks 385 McLarens for sale in the US and Canada, up from 325 a week earlier. The median ask is about $249,800. On a like-for-like basis, asks slipped 2.0% over the past week, and 19% of cars we tracked on both dates had a price cut (median cut about $3,660). The Artura, McLaren's current hybrid, saw its median ask fall 3.8% over the week.

Supply is growing and asks are soft. That's not the sign of a brand with buyers waiting in line, which is why a car that brings in new buyers matters.

So can it work?

The Urus worked because Lamborghini had a huge brand and the backing of a large group. McLaren has the brand appeal and now fresh money, but it's a smaller company. If the SUV lands with the Urus playbook, it could change McLaren's finances. If it lands like the DBX, it becomes another expensive model in a crowded segment.
